View of the landscape in which the community of Sumal Grande resides.
The New Spring Box
RMP volunteers check out the new spring box that will augment the community's current water supply with the help of the masons that built it.
Laying Pipe Below the Spring
Community members volunteer to help dig trenches and lay the new conduction piping that will convey water from the new spring to the rest of the existing water system.
Nighttime Water Quality Testing
RMP volunteers Leah Pope and Cole Davis test water samples from different parts of Sumal Grande's water system.
Trenching Across Farmland
Community members continue laying pipe to connect the new spring to the existing water system.
Trenching With a View
Community members connect pipe above a house with a view, with surrounding hills and a patchwork of farmland in the background, near the end of this trench segment.
Rerouting Pipe at Tank 1
Community members dig trench to reroute piping around the highest distribution tank in the community.
Soccer on the Square
The Sumal Grande middle school girls soccer team plays a neighboring community on the community square.
Base of the New Chlorinator
Professional mason Antonio takes measurements while laying the foundation for the new chlorinator, located on top of Tank 1.
RMP volunteers Leah Pope and Dave Caley light candles inside the dimly lit interior of the community hostel and relax after a long day.
Learning the Compass
RMP volunteer Cole Davis teaches a local teen how to use a compass while the team surveys the existing water system.
The New Chlorinator Inlet
Community members help to mix concrete and mortar for the new chlorinator box. Also shown in the foreground is inlet piping from the old spring, with new flow meter connected inline, and Tank 1 outlet piping exiting a concrete valve box.
Community volunteers collect distance and compass directional data, while RMP volunteer Jeff Hargis awaits his turn to use the abney level.
School children gather around as community and RMP volunteers survey across the town square in front of the elementary school.
A New Skill
A local teen hones his compass-reading skills while surveying the existing water system with RMP volunteers.
Finishing the Chlorinator
The professional masons put a final coat of stucco on the exterior of the new chlorinator box.
New Float Valve
One of the four new float valves is shown at distribution tank #2. The valves will shut off water flow to each tank when water in the tank reaches a certain level, thereby maintaining water in the tanks higher in the system.
New Flow Meter
RMP volunteer Dave Caley shows water committee members how to read the dials on one of the new flow meters installed near Tank 1. Collecting flow meter data will allow RMP to quantify water supply and demand in the community, and inform how well the current system is functioning.
Water System Improvements Dedication Ceremony
RMP volunteer Dave Caley shares his thoughts on the success of this year's implementation trip with a large gathering of community members during the dedication ceremony.
Token of Appreciation
The Sumal Grande Water Committee stands with the RMP travel team, holding a banner made for the team by women in the community. The banner reads: "Memento for Engineers Without Borders, Colorado - USA, for the Water System Expansion in the Village of Sumal Grande, Nebaj Region, Department of El Quiche, Guatemala, March 2017"
